Plague Curse are an international blackened death metal collaboration featuring members of Drowstorm, Vahrzaw, Vintertodt, Burden of Ymir, Calling of Phasmic Presence, and more. The band’s membership isn’t meant to be some sort of cultivated mystery so much as secondary to the result: an utterly punishing debut album bearing the all-too-appropriate title of Verminous Contempt.
Just a cursory glance at Verminous Contempt’s cover art should illustrate, in no uncertain terms, exactly what Plague Curse sound like. Indeed, the album hits propulsive overdrive the very first second you press „play“: pistons pumping, the clean-yet-cutting production suits the powerful songwriting across its 10-song / 44-minute runtime. With vocals ranging gutter-drenched growl to blackened rasp and vomits aplenty in between, dizzy-yet-dirty riffing that remains memorable and even a touch melodic, and absolutely light-speed drumming that can also usher forth a devastating breakdown, the execution of Plague Curse is beyond reproach; whoever the members may be, their technical skill and overall tightness conjoin to make Verminous Contempt all the more superlative.
