London-based rock trio DREAM NAILS are back and revitalised with a fresh offering of new music in the form of Pixies-inspired ‘This is Water’, showcasing the three-piece as galvanised and renewed, with bass player Mimi Jasson fully embracing her new role as the band’s vocalist for this exciting new era.

In collaboration with the acclaimed producer and engineer Ali Chant (Dry Cleaning, Katy J Pearson, Sorry, Yard Act), the band has plunged headfirst into a new creative process to create some of their most meta and abstract work to date while remaining rooted in the myriad shades of punk that colour their signature sound.

“We are so lucky to have worked with Ali on this song. He has worked with some true British icons”, shares bassist/vocalist Mimi Jasson“With Ali, we indulged in our playful edge, experimenting with pedals and exploring sounds that teased out the themes of the song.  When I said I wanted my voice to evoke something intimate on This is Water, he ran my vocals through a Hammond organ, the rotating Leslie speaker created a sound that resembles being underwater”.

“This song is inspired by a speech given by the late writer David Foster Wallace, who tells a story about two fish swimming along in the ocean” explains drummer Lucy Katz. “One fish remarks, ‘The water’s nice today!’ to which the other fish replies, ‘What’s water?’

“We are immersed in ourselves! The lyrics convey the idea of becoming so stuck in our own sticky experiences and identities that we struggle to truly relate to one another. We are all fish, and we are all swimming”.

Guitarist Anya Pearson adds: “The lyrics came from freewriting together, selecting lines and ideas that we wanted to connect like a deconstructed jigsaw puzzle. We’re embracing our weird side, walking a tightrope between the personal and the surreal“.
