NEW EDEN CIRCUS album IRRLICHT out August 22nd: According to Wikipedia’s definition, „will-o‘-the-wisp“ („Irrlicht“) refers to a specific luminous phenomenon that is said to occasionally appear in swamps, moors, marshes, or particularly dense, dark forests—and more rarely, in cemeteries. In folklore and superstition, these ghostly lights are often regarded either as the deceptive work of supernatural beings or as the souls of those who met an unfortunate end. Following them or even attempting to capture them is believed, according to popular belief, to bring misfortune.Engaging with the comeback album from EDEN CIRCUS, however, does not bring bad luck. If there’s any trickery involved, it lies in the way the Hamburg-based musicians never readily or carelessly reveal their intentions, crafting a rock sound that demands effort to truly grasp. One must not be fooled by the apparent accessibility of the songs, which shift between post-rock, prog-rock, and alternative rock. At its core, nothing is as it first seems—this was true for their debut album „Marula“ (2014), and it remains the case for their second record, „Irrlicht“.
That more than ten years have passed since their first album’s release is imperceptible in the successor. The lineup changes are equally inconspicuous. EDEN CIRCUS continue to deliver their intricate and slightly cerebral rock sound—one that delves deep while maintaining a holistic forward momentum. The musicians from northern Germany focus on crafting intense atmospheres and moods through deliberate arrangement. Accordingly, „Irrlicht“ unfolds with delicate intricacy and emotional weight, its songwriting brimming with dynamic contrasts—far more than one initially perceives.
